How I Plan Every Trip (Without Overpacking or Overplanning)

There was a time when I packed a giant suitcase for every trip.

I’d bring outfits “just in case,” book too many activities, and spend my vacation rushing from one side of the city to the other. Somehow, I always came home realizing I’d worn the same few outfits and barely had time to enjoy where I was.

Eventually, I realized the problem wasn’t my packing.

It was my planning.

Over the years, I’ve developed a simple system that helps me travel lighter, stay organized, and make the most of every destination. Whether I’m exploring Paris, spending a weekend in wine country, or planning a quick getaway, this is the exact process I follow.

Step 1: Start with the Destination

Every trip begins with a reason.

Sometimes it’s an unbelievable flight deal. Other times it’s a great points redemption, a concert, a wedding, a bucket-list destination, or simply somewhere I’ve been dreaming of visiting.

Once I know where I’m going, I can start researching neighborhoods, accommodations, restaurants, and experiences that fit the kind of trip I want.

Step 2: Choose One Main Experience Each Day

This is the biggest change I made—and it’s completely transformed the way I travel.

Instead of trying to squeeze ten attractions into a single day, I choose one experience I absolutely don’t want to miss.

Maybe it’s:

  • A winery tasting

  • A scenic hike

  • A cooking class

  • A museum

  • A beautiful beach

  • A reservation at an incredible restaurant

That becomes the anchor for my day.

Having one priority keeps my itinerary exciting without making it exhausting.

Step 3: Build Everything Around It

Once I know my main activity, I look at what’s nearby.

Is there a coffee shop worth visiting before?

A lunch spot the locals love?

A cocktail bar for the evening?

A scenic walking route?

Instead of zigzagging across a city, I spend the day exploring one neighborhood. I save time, spend less on transportation, and usually discover places I would have missed otherwise.

Step 4: Leave Room to Wander

Some of my favorite travel memories were never planned.

I’ve wandered into hidden bookstores, discovered rooftop bars, stumbled across live music, and found little cafés that never appeared in any guidebook.

If every minute of your trip is scheduled, there’s no room for those unexpected moments.

Give yourself permission to explore.

Sometimes the best part of a trip isn’t on the itinerary.

Step 5: Plan Your Outfits Around Your Itinerary

Once I know exactly what I’m doing each day, packing becomes surprisingly simple.

Instead of asking, “What if I need this?”

I ask:

“What am I actually wearing for this activity?”

I match each outfit to my itinerary, taking into account the weather, dress code, and photo locations. What colors would photograph well where, can I wear that item with every outfit I bring.

Suddenly, every item in my suitcase has a purpose.

That’s how I went from checking oversized luggage to traveling with a carry-on for many of my trips.

Step 6: Pack with Confidence

Because my itinerary and outfits are already planned, creating my packing list only takes a few minutes.

No duplicate shoes.

No “just in case” dresses.

No hauling around clothes that never leave the suitcase.

Packing becomes intentional instead of stressful.

The Planner That Brings It All Together

After using this system for years, I wanted one place to organize everything.

That’s why I created the Wander Guide Travel Planner.

Inside, you’ll find everything you need to plan your trip from start to finish:

  • A day-by-day itinerary planner for flights, hotels, reservations, and activities.

  • A mood board where you can organize outfit ideas by destination.

  • A packing list that keeps everything organized by category.

  • Space for notes, confirmations, and travel reminders—all in one place.

Instead of juggling screenshots, notes apps, Pinterest boards, and emails, everything lives together in one planner.

Travel Should Feel Exciting—Not Stressful

You don’t have to see everything to have an unforgettable trip.

Choose one amazing experience each day.

Build around it.

Leave room to wander.

Pack with intention.

Those simple shifts have completely changed the way I travel, and I hope they’ll do the same for you.
